Alt Albion is all about going places that no man has gone before. Going into secluded areas and fishing for breakfast and eating it with the locals. Sitting in a castle somewhere feasting on local delicacies and watching the Adams Family. Yes Alt Albion has it all, Music, good food exotic people of the land a true exchange of cultures discovered. An experience to remember.

Alt Albion is lots of colours that travelled in time and relocated on a previously white website because it had a picture of a girl lingerie with a suggestive subway sign on her leg.

    HOT!!!

Altalbion to me represents the kaleidoscope that is the nation of my birth.

For me Alt Albion is about showing what the guide books don’t. There are no guides to the UK written for and by young kiwis - but Albion ticks those boxes. It’s taught me there is way more to Britain than just London and the tourist traps. It makes me want to explore those back street stores, watch football games, visit spooky Scottish villages and my top ambition - to see a squirrel - I’m easily pleased :)

Alt Albion is about seeing the best of the alternative scene in the UK, more selective than the Lonely Planet, and more reliable than random google searches!

Alt Albion makes me want to hug the previously dreary old UK! It’s filled with colour and culture, with briefing on all the music festivals, talented artists, kitschy markets and galleries. I have visions of record stores, bright lights and late night underground gigs teamed with historical faraway villages and rich countryside. Alt Albion is by the people for the people. Choice.

AltAlbion is a wonderful mythical place where Centaur’s give piggyback rides to turtles.
A man once came up to me and offered me a cigarette, I don’t even smoke! How funny, what a funny man!

Alt Albion is stodge-free UK. It’s about sampling the freshness of current UK culture.

Alt Albion is subtle guided discovery of all that is awesome.
Alt Albion does not contain the YOU-MUST-SEE-THIS of staid traditional travel guides.

Alt Albion is wee jaunt in the Tardis to reveal the possible future of Britannia.

Not a Yorkshire pud in sight.

Alt Albion is about memories, the ones you recall and the new ones you make. It feeds the bug (travel bug that is) with glimpses of art, fashion, and tech, mixes the brew with culture and throws in some sport for good measure.

Alt Albion reminds you of excitement and adventure, of exploring beneath the obvious, the touristy, and beyond the travel brochures.

Best of all, Alt Albion doesn’t leave you on the sidelines, wondering about what is hip, new, happening and vibrant about Britain today - it takes you to the heart of all that is new.

Alt Albion is the sort of company which turns Kiwis’ dreams into reality. For the masses and masses of New Zealanders (young and old) who have spent many winters dreaming of the Mediterranean, or many summers dreaming of Mt Blanc, Alt Albion has pulled them through

As a self-confessed travel dreamer, it is this website which encourages me to live off weetbix for weeks on end and hold onto my dream. Alt Albion = Life savers! Legendary.

A funky website with great information on the weird and wonderful: places to go, things to see and do, a much more exciting and interesting showcase of the other face of the UK that tourists don’t usually get to know about. Well done!

  15. ALISTAIR ROONEY

ALT ALBION actually introduces you to areas and cultures that you normally have to trip over or find “by mistake” as most of the mainstream travel promotors stick to the old hary annuals.

Britain is Great! So is Alt Albion. You can travel in style or ‘rough it’,
have a lot of fun, gain weight or loose it, enhance your knowledge or just ‘blob out’, and heaps more activities or inactivities.

    The culture(s) and humour super.

60 million of my fellow UK citizens there waiting for me to win this fab trip back home–bring it on.

All my life I have been told that Britain is ‘home’ but I have never travelled there. New Zealand is where I was born and live. New Zealand is ‘home’ in my heart, Britain is ‘home’ in my mind and Alt Albion is the place where my heart and mind merge. Alt Albion is the guide to take me into unknown territory and into amazing experiences getting to know my heritage and bringing my antipodean No 8 Wire ingenuity into the mix. Bring it on!

Alt Albion is seeing what the locals want to see, not being one of the masses queueing forever to see something that just about anyone who has visited the UK has seen, paid a small fortune to do so and possibly ending up disappointed at the end of it.

Crowded, rough, claustrophobic England, Alt Albion shows you the other side of the country, wild, free and calm. With the relaxing idyllic country side to the medieval castles to the quaint wee villages. With all the fast paced stuff added. What more could you want?

    Mar 19, 2009 @ 6:22 pm

Alt Albion is everything that others have described poorly. It is a dream — my dream -a segment of time that is undescribable, but something that is a vision lingering in your brain — it is “The Kiwi’s Utopia”.

Albion is reputedly the ancient Greek name for Britian, and Alt Albion is a way to enjoy something really different and cool in Britian - great for young people! Albion is also a drivative of white - like the white cliffs of Dover - and it is no coincidence that Alt Albion is full of colour, as it brings colour and excitement to Britian!

I LOVE THE U.K. And Alt Albion is all about seeing the best of it. And for an “oldie” with a love of travel in her veins, Alt Albion offers a chance to re-vist once again, my best loved sites, and to visit new ones, so I can fall head over heals again, in love with Britain and it’s timeless landscape scenery, and the buildings that date back generations. N.Z. is my homeland, but it is so new in comparison to the U.K. I would never tire of visiting the U.K.
Good on you, Alt Albion, you encourage us from down under to see the other side of the world. And for many of us, this is where our roots are.

Hi, In my retirement years, I would enjoy visiting places in the UK again that were familiar to me during my childhood years, especially Cornwall were I was an evacuee during the early part of the war. I just love showing my Kiwi wife Kay the beauty of the English countryside and the wonderful history of the British Isles.

Alt Albion is for people who would rather get their coffee from Flat White than Starbucks, who collect memories instead of teaspoons, who find their own way around instead of sitting in a coach, and who check out exhibitions instead of each other on nasty 18-35 tours…

“When a man is tired of England, he is tired of life itself”.
Sadly, there are many who have been, and who are.
However! they obviously have never been to Alt Albion.
It is a place where dreams become reality.
It’s all the colours of the rainbow, with its multicultures, its arts, its history, and its natural beauty.
It is a place of fairy tales.

Alt albion is pure dead brilliant. It’s about seeing the real culture of the UK, not just the usual sights and sounds that we already know about and have seen on a million travel shows.

  70. Rachelle

Alt Albion is the must see places in Great Britain that the locals know and don’t think of as attractions simply because they’ve always been there; those places that to a non-local are fascinating!

    Mar 19, 2009 @ 6:49 pm

  71. Dan Ripley

Alt Albion puts the chav back into Charlton, it shows that Lily Allen ain’t the only singer worth shouting ‘who are ya’ at. Temples aren’t just found in India ya know they could be anywhere - even in Brighton.

So “if you wanna goto a seaside”, or find the hottest new events, food, carnivals or just some amazingly good times - Alt Albion is the place to come. There is more than just old London town out there, it’s just waiting to be found. Alt Ablbion have the binoculars, come and have a butcher’s hook (look). :)

    Mar 19, 2009 @ 6:56 pm

  77. Barrie Williamson

Alt Albion for me is going back to my roots, which have always there but have never been exposed for me as my grandparents, from Scotland figured only in a small way in my life.
I want to experience what they knew and saw and try to regain some lost ground in terms of my Anglo-Saxon heritage.
Strangely when I visit the UK I do feel quite strong bonds, but cannot really explain the feeling because through and through I am a New Zealander. Perhaps what is in your heritary genes is only hidden from sight, but lies dormant waiting for the call to awaken.

    Mar 19, 2009 @ 6:58 pm

  78. Brian

Alt Albion is being able to visit the heart of creative Britain, hang out with composers, chill out with artists, climb mountains and swim in lochs, drink in local pubs. Where new music, fashion, technology, art and sport really come to life, no more stuffiness. Great “guides” who really know their stuff and are on board for their ability to make it an epic journey

Alt Albion is that kooky couple you keep bumping into down your local who tell you their funny travel stories of finding adventure in those cool little towns in deepest Devon.

  96. Sharon Holmes

Alt Albion on first glance to me, is a unique way of showing quirky Britain. From the number 8 ball to the London taxi cab. It seems to be a versatile and sureal artistic format. Ladys forray with brick heads showing a traditional british stiff upperlip. Not to mention the colour and context is bizarre at best. Yep, with Alt Albion you can wear it, eat off it and it seems go for a ride board style. Just like me id like to wear my new clothes from London, eat in a traditional pub and cruise around britain (perhaps not on a board) but cab style instead.

Neil Armstrong said it best: “This is one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.”

Well, Alt Albion is the chance to take that giant leep, without flying to the moon. The alternative side of history, art, culture, people; the best reasons to leave home and fly 12,000 miles on an aluminium tube at 35,000 feet.

Alt Albion holdeth the key restoreth my soul back to the land i once did dwell, so once more i may dream and behold the scenes where once my eyes did fell, only thee can cast this spell to transport me there, to sample this fair land and all that’s magically new to be found since my bare-feet last touched its ground.

Wow that would be great to see the real Britain where my forebears hailed from way back in the dim dark ages and ages and eons since then, until some branches (maternal & paternal) of the tree decided to grow itself in lil old NZ. Its pretty hard trying to save fares in this economic climate!!

Alt Albion is your Pommie mate who takes one look at your Discover The Charms Of The United Kingdom’s Country Walks And Gardens guidebook, laughs, then drags you down to Shoreditch-The-New-Hoxton to dress you up like a proper indie cindy and educate you in that is undiscovered and downright awesome in the back streets of Cool Britannia.

Alt Albion reminds me WHY I’m working my butt off saving every last cent for a plane ticket out of here

    Mar 19, 2009 @ 7:49 pm

  116. shari

Wow, what an amazing creation Alt Albion turned out to be. My kids are grown now, and I’ve waited over 40 years to go on my OE. I feel truly inspired to enjoy an alternative traveling experience now that Alt Albion has opened my eyes to planning my holiday outside the square of conformity. Who would of known that The UK had so much going on outside of London. I love the way that your website is informative, fun, and vibrant. With the current state of the world, it is good to see that the English still lead the way in the arts, culture, and tourism. Way to go!!!

  117. Alfred Luther

Albion is an old name for Britain. The spirit of courage and adventure of the Britishers are reflected poetically like this:
“When gallant Cook from Albion sail’d
    to trace wide oceans o’er
true British courage bore him on
Till he landed on our shore.”

    Mar 19, 2009 @ 7:53 pm

Alt Albion to me is about HOPE. The hope to return to the land of my birth and formative years. The hope to see parts yet unknown and unseen. The hope to find how ‘perfidious Albion’ is embracing this exciting new millenium - new cultures, new ideas - and to bring the experience back for the benefit of my whanau, and my adopted, and loved home.

    Mar 19, 2009 @ 8:01 pm

  122. Rob Ferguson

Alt Albion is not your grandmother’s Britain; not a time-locked look at the now mythical land of bad food, bad hygeine and the Queen. What Alt Albion is, is a reflection of modern Britain in all its multifaceted glory.

“Alt Albion”, ah, quirky enticement to exploration of the once perfidious, the Land of Hope and Glory, the new Jerusalem, proud Britannia.
An invitation to that which is off-beat, unusual, hidden yet quintessentially home-land Britain. Places of history, mystery and excitement beckon.Cultural, informative, challenging and so, so different.
British heritage revealed through highways and side streets, underground and hilltop, cottage and castle, flower garden and football pitch.
People and events that stimulate and inspire.

The land of Elizabeth and Churchill, Cromwell and Drake,Shakespeare,Brunel,Beckham and Jagger, The South Bank and Old Trafford, The Tower and “The Gherkin” becomes irresistible through Alt Albion.

Alt Albion together with the generosity of Air N.Z sounds a wonderful way for me and my husband to get to enjoy and see the REAL England and the place of my birth over 60 years ago. Alt Albion obviously spends a lot of time showing you the normal and interesting everyday type places and not just the usual tourist type places that so many tourist companies tend to show you.
It would be a dream come true for us to win this promotion with Alt Albion and Air N.Z as for the first time last year we travelled for 4 weeks to visit my birthplace but unfortunately our trip was ruined because of illness that occurred during our visit. Normally we will never be able to make the trip again but with your kindness hopefully Alt Albion can make this happen again for us to enjoy.

Define the indefinable. Alt.Albion is just that.It attempts to show the New Age version of the Old Age Britain from a Visitors perspective. From the White Cliffs of Dover, where it started to the Flat Whites of today. The ideas are as far flung as is the diversity of choice. It is as up to date as today and as old as History. Take your PICK. it is all about your Choice of experience.

To us Britain is not just home, from many years ago, but the whole world.

The history, the culture, the colour, the people. Walk in the footsteps of the ancient Britons or the Romans. Sit quietly and absorb the hugh cathedrals, or sit in an old country church, wander amongst the grave stones of our ancestors.

Explore the new world of colour and culture, the many ethnic groups, the old English food and new ethnic foods. Enjoy threatre, drama, comedy, musical and ballet.

Walk the old streets, admire the restored areas and just absorb everthing that is Britian.

Alt Albion is all about real reasons to love and experience the UK in many and varied ways, some not at all well known. Great site for great sights (except perhaps for the Geldof gel and her tats, sorry).

Alt Albion? Reminds me of the famous historical club which has only just returned to the Premier League for the first time after running away with the Promotion stakes last season.

Unfortunately, it languishes at the bottom of the table despite attempting to play attacking football. And it is the famous name of Albion is the only one that features in the Barclays Premier League, too.

Historical Britain also features many historical football clubs, and last time I only had time to visit my favourite Midlands club at Wolverhampton, as well as the club Shop which we don’t have here in NZ.

But, a visit to any of the Club Museums especially the likes of even Arsenal or even to Villa Park or even Hampden Park would be a great honour to be lapped up - such would be the atmosphere at the home of football.

Alt Albion is all about bringing families together who are on their OE - it is about “Enjoying the moments” and “Making the memories”. To be able to share a moment and memories with my daughter in the UK is beyond anything I can imagine - and oh I long to have that mummy hug I miss so much.

AltAlbion is THE site to go to for great info on the UK. I have been away from there for 43 years, and AltAlbion really makes me homesick. Longboats on canals - wonderful - I remember canals when they were just grotty waterways, clogged with waste and occasionally a barge going along them.
Visit country villages, their shops, markets, pubs etc.,- go to Alt Albion.
Stay in lovely accomodation from castles to isolated country farmstay B & Bs - go to Alt Albion.
I may be old, but I ain’t dead yet!! I could cope well with any trip

    Mar 20, 2009 @ 3:02 am

  204. Heather

Albion is the oldest known name for Great Britain - interestingly it is even mentioned in a verse of Advance Australia Fair! This Alt Albion website is a way of connecting with places, people and events in Great Britain in a very alternative way compared to that of traditional travel brochures and websites. I welcome the opportunity to experience more of this alternative viewpoint by interacting with the “tour guides” as they show me their Alternative Great Britain!

Alt Albion - great destinations in Great Britain. Give me that English food and let me eat it in the carpark at Stonehenge, then take me to the market at Camden Lock, wing me on to a rock concert and let me watch the sun come up in the Orkneys. My bag is packed, my passport is current.

Alt Albion is a BRILLIANT place to go to find all things to do in the UK that are off the beaten track. You’ll find places to go and adventures to experience, to fill in the times when you have had enough of visiting relatives, hanging with old school chums and trapsing around boring museums. I wish I’d known about Alt Albion that last time I was in the UK, it would have made my visit much more enjoyable.

Following the steps of our ‘tour guides’, we are provided with intimate encounters with the famous, infamous and underground.

Lets face it, New Zealanders are adventurous people. The early settlers packed up and travelled all the way here here with little more than big dreams and open minds. This is who we are as a people and this is what Alt albion is me, its a chance to dicover the undiscovered, about opening your mind, stepping outside of the box and taking the path less travelled. Thanks Alt Albion! :)

  330. Cerian Wagstaff

Alt Albion is about discovering the undiscovered, the creative and the authentic voice of Britain. I would like to look at Britain the way Iain Sinclair does (London Orbital) or Scott Hamilton in his discussions on anti-travel at Reading the Maps blog.

I am a creative person, working around and with designers, writers, artists, musicians and dancers. I was born in England but grew up here in Aotearoa. I would love the opportunity to visit Britain the Alt Albion way - uncovering the underground, the creative and authentic voice of Britain!

I already have an idea for a book: A kiwi couple revisiting their roots and encountering a full cast of eccentric characters and unusual places on their quest to discover the real Britain. A kaleidoscopic portrait of Britain!

    Bill Zavatsky wrote that:

‘The grand statement of Surrealism was that right here, right now, in this world, perhaps with a walk down the street and a chance look in the window of the local drugstore, you could find an entryway to the other world…the lost paradise…’

Alt Albion will you help me find an entryway to the other world?

    Mar 23, 2009 @ 6:59 pm

  331. Eva

I’ve decided that alt albion is kinda like a personal blog, in the sense that people are talking about things they’ve seen/done/tasted that made an impact on THEM, not just things they think they should do or would impress would-be visitors to the UK. In this way, it’s more about experiences that happen to be in the UK, rather than just bog-standard touristy shite that you could read anywhere.
It’s like having someone telling you about something they did or somewhere they went - you’d rather listen to firsthand accounts of things that are new/different than just read a glossy pamphlet, wouldn’t you? Big ups to ya. Keep up the good work and just be yourself and enjoy whatever comes your way :)

I had never heard of Alt Albion, I wish I had before we went to London. After a short brows of their website I see so many things we missed that we would have enjoyed seeing and experiencing!

Should we be lucky enough to win the trip there are so many things left to see we would be hard pressed to see them all.

Alt Albion is about bringing the fantastic array of beauty, fun, culture, and all there is to know about Great Britian into our hearts and minds with their well thought tours. Scotland is my Homeland where I was born and bred, New Zealand has been my home for the past 37 years, and while I love it I still miss my bonnie Scotland, and would love to see more of it as well as the rest of Great Britain. Alt Albion is the alternative way to see Albion (the old name for Great Britain derived from the greek Alba for Scotland), and as a person who usually travels alone this kind of tour holiday appeals to me. And to go back to see & be a partof Scotland this year of the Homecoming Scotland in full force would be the ultimate !!!!!!!! Wooooo Hooooo !!!!!!

Britain is a country in the process of change and Alt Albion is a great way to feel and smell (almost) the pulse of the place. I’ve never been to the UK in person but all the accounts from such a variety of people is a small window into life half way round the world.

    Mar 26, 2009 @ 7:26 pm

  368. Wendy Phillips

What a trip of a lifetime. What more could compare to going to the other side of the world and just experiencing another way of life and cultures. This trip would not be wasted on me and my partner as we would make every day count and every place would be a new and exciting and we would be just like kids in a lolly shop!!!!
I have family over in England that I have never met either, so far they are just people in photo’s and a voice on the end of the phone.
Alt Albion has the potential to bring me all my wishes at once.

Granddad always said it was cold and miserable and that a bunch of German bother boys always seemed to try and drop bombs on him whenever he tried to have a pint with his mates.
He also said the Americans had taken over the best cafes and any boarding houses with an inside dunny.
Italy was much more fun he reckoned.

However, after a peek at Alt Albion Granddad says it looks like they’ve tidied up a bit since 1945. Might be worth a second look he says.

Unclear, the path ahead leads where?
    Where I wish it to.
    How will my future fare?
    How I wish it to.

    When should the journey begin?
    When I wish it to.
    Who will be my companion?
    Whoever I wish.

    While experiencing fate’s intervention
Travel I would like with Alt Albion direction.
    Enjoying the day.
Spirit and soul will lead the way.
Body and mind will have their say.

So I take a big breath
    With UK in sight
    Clouds in the sky
    I long to fly

Alt Albion is about the OTHER UK - the real, one. The one the guide books never mention, the quirky, off the beaten track - Art,markets, bands - everything you REALLY want to see. And the fact that they’re offering the chance of an absolutely brilliant trip has nothing whatever to do with all the praise I’m heaping on them!

It is history and Tupuna statis. I would dearly love to know and someday see where my Tupuna originated. That is a dream worth reaching for.

According to the Collins dictionary, the definition of “alternative” is “denoting a lifestyle, culture, art form… that is regarded as preferable to that of contemporary society because it is less conventional, materialistic, or institutionalized.” I suspect that Alt Albion is a bit of an alternative guide to the UK.

    Mar 26, 2009 @ 9:53 pm

  402. Leanne Smith

Alt Albion is the one and only place to visit when contemplating a trip to the UK. Where else do you need to go for info on places, food and things to do? Alt Albion cuts to the point and lets you see the real Britain. Bring it on and Rule Britannia!

    Mar 26, 2009 @ 10:04 pm

  403. Keriyn

I was fortunate to visit UK many years ago. Like most of us Kiwis our roots are steeped in UK. My ‘bones’ are in Scotland & Ireland. Alt Albion seems to be like no other travel agency in that it goes to the ‘bones’ of the country.
Should I be fortunate to win, I would take my husband (like a second honeymoon) & go further north in Scotland & also visit Ireland where I have not been yet. Also I would take him to old ‘Cardiff Arms’ park as he just loves his Rugby.

The chance to go back to visit Britain again now that we’ve retired would be a great experience and to see how different the country is to when we traveled there in the late eighty’s. We have always planed to go back to the British Isles but the money just doesn’t go that far any more and to go back to Wales and around Mt.Snowden and Criccieth again is to good a chance to pass up. Also to add in a trip to Scotland and maybe Ireland, where the green of the hills and dales are inspiring.

Now I’ve finally worked out how to enter (not very young u know!)
If Alt Albion had been around when I lived in the UK, I would have known all about it, when I was younger. But hey, I wouldn’t have had today’s experience of exploring Alt Albion. I realise now what Alt Albion is about and understand what the excitement is all about. Now I have another web site as a favourite.
If Alt Albion can do that for a 71 year old, it has to be good. If I win the trip, must remember to wear the T-Shirt!

Nostalgia. Such good memories from unexpected locations.
Met in Edinburgh, Married in London, conceived in Wales. Best city visited…just has to be York. So old but so much fun & history…..great Pubs.
Saw football train riot, two Scots Teams play in Edinburgh along with the typical touristy Castle…and of course the All Blacks in Cardiff. Fossil seeking in Scarborough, exploring uncharted caves in the Lake District and abseiling at Harrison rocks…..Went for a year and stayed for 4!
St Albion send shivers of nostalgia anda sense of yerning to see some of these places again to see how they have changed.

  426. Steve

Alt Albion is a website that has a competition, that at time of this post has 353 replies + this one, where I estimate 98.87% of replies are from brown nosed competition junkies competing for the prize & thats all.
I doubt many of them have actually looked around at all.
Truth is: Navigation bar only shows 1 option (home) with ie 8 and even that is in a weird place, but does work ok with Firefox.
Nonetheless it is cumbersome to navigate & really needs a complete overhaul. Although most of the graphics are pleasant on the eye.
The concept of the site is great & could be a very useful & popular site, should the webmaster pay attention to the pages layout, compatibility issues & the general objective.
Failing to pay attention to those issues will result in an extreme downturn in traffic after the competition has ended.
I strongly doubt this will be considered the winning comment, but it’s honest & I hope, helpful in some way/s to the webmaster.
    Good Luck

Altalbian is the epitomy of English Comedy. Altalbian is not a place or thing, but a concept; an elaborate joke to promote Britain. Hundreds of kiwis are commenting about how wonderful it would be to win a trip there, or to visit Britain with help of an alternative tour guide, to see things and places they would not know about, to use or buy unusual products while visiting Britain. The descriptions are entertaining and visual. The marketing tool is working well and the designers of the website are smiling, just like beautiful contented cats (from Altalbian, Cheshire, England, I presume?).

Albion means mystery and excitement. A mighty giant who discovered a barren isle and made it fit for amazing human habitation. A country that has made the best scientists, industrialists and mysticists this world has evder seen. England is great, but Scotland is greater. bagpipes, mountains. mystery, lochs (lakes to the sasenach) people. Contrary to popular misconception Scots are among the most friendly and generous in the world.

Zing, zoom and zazzle - Alt Albion. It has an infectious sense of joie de vivre, creating a new perspective and introducing us to an exciting Britain merging victorian glory with an exhilarating present. I thought Britain was museums, castles, tramping across the moors and a pathway to Europe. Now I can see it is all those things and much much more. Britain is HOT!!! And I soooo want to go there!

I just wish we had known about the fantastic Alt Albion when we visited in 2008. It would have been so helpful to us when we were planning our first OE. We are in our 60’s and had an absolutely amazing time but it would have been even more so with the assistance of the Alt Albion website. You are amazing and I can not recommend it highly enough to all that are thinking of travelling and visiting the great United Kingdom.
Alt Albion certainly offers what others websites do not and that is the great diversity of things to do, see and experience on the other side of the world where the majority of New Zealand’s forebears came from all those years ago.
Well done Alt Albion, keep up the great work and make even more New Zealanders so glad that they found you.

Before today I had never heard of Alt Albion. But I understand it is about discovering the heart of Britain, with alternative attractions, instead of traveling the normal tourist routes. My daughter is in the U.K and is in no hurry to come home, she tells me about all the great adventures she is having. I would love to win so I can get to experience what she is talking about and more, and of course so I can get to see her again!

  466. Doug Allen

For me, Alt Albion is a place to get away from the pre-packaged blurb that travel agents churn out about holiday opportunities that are available when visiting Britain. Here you get the comments from people who have done it and benefit from their experience. You also rub shoulders with with others who are planning their trips and exchange ideas. Alt Albion is the British reality that I prefer.

    The Alt Albion recipe
    Alternative Smorgasbord of life

    Ingredients

Copious amounts of Art, Design, Fashion,
    Life, Music, Sport and Technology.

    Directions

First remove all stuffiness and any signs of boredom.
Cut out pretentiousness and puree the melon cauli.
Into large melting pot, place generous amounts of bohemian eclectic radiance.
Lightly sauté local culture and chill with artists.
Combine novel gigs and funky threads sourced from local boutique markets.
Mix in whacky humour ensuring populace have good thyme.
Arrange layers of awesome feathers and vinyl.
Toss in a liberal dollop and beat till light and fluffy.
Add a good pinch of spunk and season to Tate.
Pour over a local tipple and leave to summer.
Garnish with artisan and sprinkle of zest.
Drizzle honey over top if a little tart

Best served HOT accompanied by a fine Air New Zealand wine and shared with you’re new found friends.

I think AltAlbion fulfil a great service for Young Kiwis about to visit Britain. It is interactive, and shares information in ways that suit them. My biggest Tip for a successful, satisfying Visit to Britain is to JOin the New Zealand Historic Places Trust http://www.historic.org.nz. With this membership, you are entitle to visit any of the National Trust properties in Britain - http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk.
In, for example, the southeastern corner, there are 42 places to go in Kent, Surrey and Sussex, including my personal favourite
    Chartwell, Kent
Family home and garden of Sir Winston Churchill. There you can explore the house, grounds and studio of one of Britain’s heroes - and hear and see footage of his speeches and adventures.
I would also recommend using the NZ Historic Places Trust to visit historical places in New Zealand. You need to be an ambassador for our beautiful country, and enthuse people to come and visit. You need to have ‘bin there done that’ to speak knowledgeably and enthusiastically about Waitangi, the Bay of Islands, Rotorua, Queenstown and digging your own jacuzzi at Hot Water Beach!

Oi oi, I’ve just got this to say, the Alt Albion is a little bit woooo!… A little bit wayhaaaay!..It’s a portal from Middle Earth to the center of the universal culture that IS the original Mother Land. Now, it’s provided for anyone with itchy feet and nimble fingers to start the wunderlust that is ‘the big OE’ from the comfort and security of their big fat armchair. It’s a chance to hear what to expect from the very ’soap tastic’ blogs of NZders doing what you want to be doing over there BEFORE you do it, and that way you can see if they survived it, lol, awesome. Alt Albion… NO cost, NO stress, NO pressure, just fantastic mindblowing ideas of how to pack as much goodtimes as your funky free spirit will allow into your allotted time in the UK. (Actually the Queen herself may have to jolly well kick you back out her country for you to want to come home!!!! ) Surely the founders Alt Albion are up for a Knighthood from the ol’ girl for their duty to mankind. It’ll get the wind up ya. Oi, Alt Albion, the ‘Dog’ wants his ‘Bollox’ back guys! Good on ya.

Kia ora all, I’ve been reading through the comments on this site and its been really helpful for me. The last time I visited Britain was in 2006 and I went with a group. It was amazing what food we could take with us, we had fish, paua, eel, chocolate and heaps of other stuff which was great for the people we met up with over there. We catered for a small gathering and some of them hadn’t been home for years so a ‘taste from home’ was more than welcome. I wouldn’t have known we could take all that stuff if it wasn’t for the web. Just being able to find out what was ok and what wasn’t made things easier for us. Imagine finding out we could take all those goodies. We flew AirNZ and the flights and the service was excellent, especially for some of our group who were first time flyers. We had a great time looking around, visiting markets and doing a bit of the touristy thing. The kind of travel info that we really needed isn’t the kind you get in a tourist guide so the Alt Albion website would have made it so much easier for us to find out what other people had seen and done that was a bit off the beaten track. I’ve got to do a bit of work today, so can’t spend any more time reading the comments on your site. But it has been worthwhile and very interesting.

What does Alt Albion mean to me? ….. it means lounging around a wine bar in Covent Garden watching buskers perform, sitting inside a traditional English pub with friends on a cold winters day, walking around Camden soaking in the atmosphere and grabing a bargin at the market. It’s going to music gigs/festivals every summer and experiencing things that you couldn’t do anywhere else in the world.

Alt Albion means turning over a pebble and finding a gemstone - it’s the amazing culture and atmosphere of a country which not only has a jaw-dropping history, but some of the best alternative, underground, forward-thinking music, art, fashion and culture the world has to offer.

    Mar 29, 2009 @ 10:30 pm

Alt Albion is the true bithplace of sex, drugs and rock and roll - from the Beatles to the Rolling Stones, to Pete Doherty, Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney and Russel Brand…Alt Albion is walking past a gang of the last of the mohikan punks on the streets of Camden. It’s watching the new up-and-comers at Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the Comedy Store in Picadilly, the O2 or the Brixton Academy.

It’s being the first to know what it’s like to see the world’s next big rock band, designer or artist. It’s living the dream.

Alt Albion means to me what i missed out in the 70’s. I got married too young and never got to do my OE. I didn’t see Twiggy at her peak and didn’t get to camp outside at Abbey Road Studios waiting for my favourite Beatle Ringo Star to turn up.

Now that I am in my 50’s i feel nostalgia for all those things i missed. I have not given up the dream of my OE and Alt Albion is my way of experiencing London today.
