#16 BBC iPlayer

The BBC were one of the first media companies to embrace our new digital world. The iPlayer was one of the first forays by a major content owner into the scary realm of online content provision.

While others were totally freaking out about their content being ’stolen’ by the theiving public, the BBC through caution to the wind and got their content out to the people of Britain via their iPlayer.

BBC iPlayer

It has gone through several iterations, and is now viewed as one of the leading online content models. Their formula has been replicated around the world, including back in New Zealand where TVNZ seems to have borrowed heavily from the Beeb in their own OnDemand content site.

In its current guise you can catch up on the last 7 days worth of BBC TV and radio as and when you want. There is a desktop client, and even iPhone/iPod Touch, Nokia N96, Sony PS3 and Nintendo Wii versions.I have had a quick play with the iPhone version, and in WiFi coverage it it fantastic. Great if you are stuck on a long tube ride.

You can get a taste of what it is all about from back home - the radio shows are available outside the UK. But to get the full experience geeky travellers will need to be within the UK border. Well worth checking out when you get over here!
